Keep Your Implant Records: The Paperwork That Protects Your Smile

4 min readFebruary 27, 2026
All Quick Tips

Dental work can outlast the clinic that did it, the city you were in and the notes you meant to keep. Years later, a new dentist anywhere in the world may need to know exactly what was placed and how. A little paperwork, gathered at the time, turns a future headache into a five-minute conversation. Ask for these records for any significant treatment.

What to keep

What was done, and where

A written summary of each procedure, the teeth involved and the dates. For implants, note the exact system and component sizes used, so any future dentist can match parts precisely.

Your imaging

Copies of your X-rays and any 3D scans, ideally as digital files you keep yourself. These are the single most useful thing a new dentist can be handed.

Materials and warranty details

The crown, veneer or implant materials used, plus any warranty or guarantee terms in writing. Keep the contact details of the clinic alongside them.

An aftercare and maintenance plan

When to have things checked, how to clean around any new work and what warning signs to watch for. Good work still needs upkeep.

Store it where you will find it

A single folder, physical or in the cloud, that travels with you. If you ever move, switch dentists or need urgent care abroad, it is all in one place.

The takeaway

You would keep the paperwork for a car or a laptop. Your teeth are with you far longer. Ten minutes of record-keeping today is the cheapest insurance in dentistry.
